Bumtaibum - Title sequence and show graphics

This was an iconic show in the 90’s in Finland and it came back once again with another season. Stringular got the brief to create an intro sequence for the show plus the other usual materials such as print, bumpers and lower third graphics. This was a great challenge to get into, as the very original theme sequence from the 90’s is kind of iconic. Here are some details how the final piece was done.

Usually, when I get the brief I write it down and scribble my first thoughts on it, even if they suck. They usually do. The brief was open, the idea was to create a theme that was used as an intro to the show. I immediately thought about the original version with the dancing piano keys and decided to go along similar lines. So I came up with the dueling pianos concept. The sketch is crude but it was enough for me jump on the actual tools and start creating.

My first steps usually include creating the style pics for the client to see how it would work visually. These depict the key moments of the intro.

When creating the style, I usually create a crude previz of the animation. This works nicely in giving an overview of the pacing and feel. The challenge was that there was no music as it is always played live in the studio during the show.

As the whole sequence is computer generated imagery (doesn’t mean that computer creates it though:) ), my first tool to be used was Cinema 4d and Octane render. A lot of mograph trickery was used to get the keys move as wanted. I made few other scenes as well, mostly using collisions and dynamics but they ended up looking a bit too realistic.

I also created the material to be used in the print. This is a sample of the high-res stuff.

And here is the final intro theme for Bumtsibum TV-show. I love making title sequences for film and TV. It is so vital part of the storytelling and setting the mood. I hope you enjoyed this simple behind the scenes thing, there are more cases to appear soon!
