Collaboration Basics

Occasionally I hire external help for projects, and I appreciate being able to allow the worker to take ownership of their work and bring their perspective to the project. So, even if the other designer’s outcome is not entirely in line with the brief provided, it can bring creative value and insights in a way that I might not have thought of myself. It's essential to give the creator space and the opportunity to approach the task from their perspective, rather than the giver's point of view. The endless role of being a pixel police, trying to force out the vision in one's head, can drain motivation from both parties.

In addition to the mentioned points, fostering an environment that encourages collaboration and open communication is crucial. When hiring external help, establishing a dialogue that allows for the exchange of ideas can lead to innovative solutions and unexpected outcomes. This collaborative approach not only empowers the worker to contribute actively but also promotes a sense of shared ownership in the project.

Furthermore, embracing diverse perspectives is a key aspect of the creative process. Each individual brings a unique set of experiences and insights to the table. Allowing the external assistant the freedom to inject their personality into the work can result in a more enriched and dynamic final product. It's not just about meeting predefined criteria but also about welcoming the potential for a project to evolve beyond initial expectations.

Moreover, recognizing the expertise of the external collaborator is essential. They may possess skills or knowledge that complement the project in ways that were not initially apparent. Trusting their capabilities and providing them with the autonomy to leverage their strengths can lead to a more well-rounded and successful outcome.

In summary, the collaboration between the project initiator and external help is not just a transaction but an opportunity for mutual growth and enrichment. By valuing the input of the assistant, fostering open communication, embracing diverse perspectives, and acknowledging their expertise, the collaborative journey becomes more fulfilling, leading to innovative and exceptional results.
